Some stories are worth
more than a car.

I bought this car for one very simple reason. It had running boards.

Not because they were rare. Not because they added any value to the car. And certainly not because they made it drive better. I needed them for my wedding. My wife is considerably taller than I am. And I had absolutely no intention of standing on a little stool on my wedding day just to kiss her. So I bought a car with running boards. Problem solved.

I suppose that tells you quite a lot about my relationship with cars.

I have spent a large part of my professional life putting values on them. Condition, originality, history, provenance, rarity, demand – there are plenty of things you can analyse to determine what a car is worth. But there is another kind of value that you cannot calculate.

Sometimes it is connected to a journey. Sometimes to a particular moment. Sometimes to a person. And sometimes it is simply the reason you bought the thing in the first place.

A value can be calculated.
A story can not.
